Hello! 6 months later we love them. Honed does not feel dirty or chalky. They just feel cool and smooth. The honed texture is not shiny, but it’s not “dull” either – I think it just looks classic.

Here’s the deal though – you need to be vigilant with them. We are getting ready to seal them again. We’re going to do it ourselves, which we are assuming is going to be no big deal (we planned to do it in December but we’ve been lazy). It’s just a wipe-on product. But other than that – just keep them clean and that’s it. We don’t regret the decision one bit.

Okay, so 6 months later what do you think? I googled the topic (because I need to make a decision on countertops in the next few days) and this post popped up. Would you do it again? Does the honed feel dirty or chalky? PLEASE HELP! This decision is going to kill me!

It’s true! G had an accident with a jointer (it’s a power tool that planes down the surface of wood) back in the summer of 2009. So now he’s missing half of an index finger. It was quite a day. Someday I’ll write a post about it…

Your blog is awesome! I just read through all of your archives. One question… (I hope it’s not too morbid to ask) did you really lose a finger? A whole finger? If so, I’m so sorry. I’m kind of terrified of power tools. This doesn’t help.

We got the cabinets at barkercabinets.com. I’ve been planning to do a separate post on them once everything was done but I’ve been slacking on the blog lately. Overall, we are very happy with them. There were a few minor problems (a few wrong pieces delivered, two of the doors were not quarter sawn oak), but we ordered a ton of cabinets and as far as I have read/researched, it was not a huge problem. They were easy to work with, answered questions quickly and replaced incorrect pieces without hesitation.

But don’t get me wrong. It was a ton of work. The dying, the staining, the poly, the assembly, the install.

But they are gorgeous. They look exactly how we wanted them to look. I couldn’t find these in any IKEA, Home Depot, or showroom around.
