Hardware Decision 2011/2012 – THE RESULTS ARE IN(stalled)!

remember this? good times, good times.

A few months ago, I asked you smart, intelligent, good looking people of the interwebz to help us in our kitchen cabinet hardware placement quest. And boy george did you come through. However, in all the in chaos of voting and comments, a more sinister subject emerged. The fact that our hardware was all wrong for our cabinets. A bad match. Like chocolate and rancid peanut butter. Or Hall and murderous Oates. Everyone who commented had valid points, and I always trust everything I read on the internet. So we returned the too-cuppy cup pulls. The knobs had to go, too.

We replaced them with these:

However, we did not follow the highest polling results from the internet voting. 64% of the vote said to place them at the top of the drawer fronts, while only 15% said to place them in the center. But at the time, the pulls we had would have been an uber-tight fit in the center, so I’m going to run on the theory that if we had these new pulls, the vote would have been different, and it would have been a landslide in favor of center placement. In fact, our exit polling showed this much was true.

I think these new, slimmer ones fit nicely in the center, and we’re very happy with the spacing. So I’m not holding another vote. Feel free to voice your dissent in the comments. I’ll forward them on to my Super PAC: Americans and Norwegians for a Faster Wrap Up of of this Remodel and More Respect For Rock Bands From Scandinavia.

Plus, G and I are no longer wildly pawing the drawer fronts open like badgers. Let’s give it up for good old American progress!

I originally ended this post with a celebratory Willy Moon dancing video, but G insisted it end with more Norwegian rock propaganda. So here you go. View if you dare, or if you are just curious to see what the Norwegian rock landscape was in the late 80s. This is what G listened to as a child, and it’s now the sound that fills this house, day in and day out. Send help.

  1. Love the pulls you chose! (And the spacing/positioning.) Where are they from? (Did I miss that part? I haven’t finished my coffee yet.)

  2. Heather says:

    I want to accuse you of being a flip-flopper . . . but I can’t. They look great.

  3. Robin says:

I love those new bin pulls so much more! Where did you get them? I think centered is visually the best place to put them and with the slimmer design they fit much better.

Sorry – I should have said it in the post: The new hardware is from Home Depot. Thomasville Hardware line. Plus, we buy so much crap from that place, and return so much crap from that place that we had some sweet store credit which made the whole purchase feel like 50% off (althouch technically it wasn’t but I pretended it was).

  5. I have to say that I love the new pulls sooooo much better than the other ones. And the positioning looks great, too. :)

I hope that you have photos of your gorgeous cabinets on your cell so that you can proudly show them off to everyone! haha They’re stunning.

  6. I really like the new pulls but (I hate to be the dissenter) I would have put the pulls in the upper band of the drawers. In the deep drawers they work OK in the center but in the shallow drawers they look like you’d rake your knuckles when you reach for the pull. The reality is who cares what anyone thinks so long as you are happy.

  7. The choice on the pulls is perfect and I covet those counters every time I see them in these pics. The kitchen looks great.

  8. Linda says:

Gorgeous! I love it when a plan comes together. You’ve given me some good ideas and great process to follow.

  9. tbigs says:

LOVE them! And yay for accessing the inside of your drawers!!

I spent some time looking for where you got the cabinets themselves (in an un-assembled state) b/c hubs and I are going to re-do the kitchen, and want to try to do it on the cheap – have you not posted about where you got them because you didn’t like them? Where did you get them? Did you happen to find any feedback from anyone else on un-assembled cabinets?

    Thanks!

We got the cabinets at barkercabinets.com. I’ve been planning to do a separate post on them once everything was done but I’ve been slacking on the blog lately. Overall, we are very happy with them. There were a few minor problems (a few wrong pieces delivered, two of the doors were not quarter sawn oak), but we ordered a ton of cabinets and as far as I have read/researched, it was not a huge problem. They were easy to work with, answered questions quickly and replaced incorrect pieces without hesitation.

But don’t get me wrong. It was a ton of work. The dying, the staining, the poly, the assembly, the install.

But they are gorgeous. They look exactly how we wanted them to look. I couldn’t find these in any IKEA, Home Depot, or showroom around.
